How To Build A Home Gym | DIY Home Gym

Since it's the beginning of the year and a lot of people have fitness goals on their mind, I felt it appropriate to choose this project. This isn't exactly like most of our project post but it was a transformation from a dinning room to home gym.

The decision to do this started around 3 1/2 years ago and stemmed from 2 different reasons. The first was the workout area was located on the 3rd floor and there was very limited space to really move around. Overall it felt like mis-use of the space and was a safety hazard for the kids being that it wasn't in a closed room. The second was that we weren't really using the dining room for eating but the kids were using the room as an art center. They would leave it completely destroyed every day and we were tired of cleaning it so a solution was born; we'll create a dedicated room for the home gym!

The power rack is by Rogue Fitness and was purchased used from Craigslist. It's the flat-foot model so it doesn't require floor mounting. The weight plates were purchased used from ABC Fitness and there's a total of 360 lbs. The flooring is gym quality and was purchased new from ABC Fitness. I cut 3 strips to cover the room and this definitely helps prevent damage to the floor from weights.

The olympic weight plate tree is by Titan Fitness and the standard weight plate tree is by Golds Gym. The elliptical is by NordicTrack and was purchased used from Facebook Marketplace which has since been replaced by a Peloton bike. Most of the accessories were purchased from various places such as Amazon, Walmart, and Play It Again Sports. We're able to do most core/basic exercises but I would like to add a cable system to the room somehow.

If I'm being honest, we have not been using this room like we should over the past couple years. When we first created it, I used it everyday for quite so time and started to slack off as time went by. During this time, the kids got more use out of it than we did. Our kids used it as a jungle gym and our toddler used it as an indoor swing. I'm happy to say now though that we did start back using it recently and hopefully can maintain motivation to keep going!

Thanks for checking out my blog on how to build a home gym and transform an unused space!
