How To Build Built-in Shelves | DIY Built-in Shelves

diy shelves in office surrounding double doors

This project is a follow-up add-on to the office, only it happened in 2021 which was 3 years after the first office upgrade. The entrance to the office is a double door with glass panels and on each side of the door is less than 2 feet of empty space.

We had talked several times over the course of the years about what we could fill that space with and we finally decide to go with shelving surrounding the door with the top shelf having an extended bump out. As with the office desk, we went for the "built-in" look without actually ripping all of molding out to make it a true built-in. I found this project on Pinterest and followed most of it excluding the dimensions, the bookshelves (I custom built all of them) and a couple accessories.

The bookshelves are made from 3/4 maple plywood and the backing is 1/4 maple plywood all ripped on the table saw and assembled with a nail gun.

The center shelf is supported by 3 metal "L" brackets screwed to a 2x4 which is attached to a wall stud. There are also 3 small brackets on the top to keep the shelf from tilting forward. To cover up the support brackets, 5 1x4s were added to the bottom of the shelf and a sheet of maple plywood was nailed to that.

The base that the shelves sit on is made from a 2x4 box for rigidity and trimmed with 1x8 appearance grade board and 2 types of molding to blend the shelves into the existing baseboard design.

I used 5 different types of trim molding on the shelves to give them a fancy appearance. It's all painted in Sherwin-Williams Extra White and the holes/gaps were sealed with white caulking. The back panel of the shelves are painted the same color as the wall to make them blend in better. I did all of the painting before assembly and only touched up after the fact.

We love the shelving and the storage it provides although Ciji tells me they're not for storing stuff, rather for displaying "what-nots". :) These create a great backdrop when on conference calls and Ciji has gotten several compliments while on meetings.
