How To Build Floating Shelves | DIY Floating Shelves

Floating shelves in the dining room

I always laugh when my wife (Ciji) refers to a collection of items on a shelf as "what-nots" but every season, there's always a rotation of "what-not" items that need a place to be displayed in the house. Our solution was to build a set of floating shelves that could with stand the weight of several items. Like most of the projects I start, it's off to Pinterest to see what ideas are out there and what we like.

This was a fairly simple and straight forward build starting with a 2x4 ledger and supports. These were leveled & mounted on the wall directly to 3 studs using (6) 2 1/2 spax screws in each shelf with another 2x4 added on the front to complete the frame. To conceal all of the structural screws used, I face covered all 3 visible sides with 1x4 boards pocket-holed together and attached to the frame with a nail gun.

Next I ripped the top and bottom parts of the shelves out of 1/4in maple plywood and attached to the frame using the nail gun. The wall around each shelf was then taped off, and the shelves puttied & sanded in preparation for stain. It was kinda messy doing it this way and if I were to do it again, I would do all of the work in the garage and then mount the shelf.

These shelves have served us well over the past few years from seasonal decorations to family photos and of course, lets not forget the "what-nots"!
