How To Build Overhead Garage Storage | DIY Overhead Garage Storage

diy overhead garage storage with lots of items on shelf

This is one of my favorite projects. We were able to add additional storage space without having to transform another area or sacrifice a current living area. The push for this project came from inconvenience of having to carry Christmas trees and decoration from the 3rd floor attic every year. Having all of this located in the garage makes it easier to access and we don't have to glitter bomb the rest of the house while transporting.

To start the project off, we had to locate the studs for the surrounding walls for horizontal support and ceiling for vertical support.

The entire structure is built with 2x4 for the framing and 3/4 OSB plywood for the flooring. The front beam is a double bonded 2x4 made with 2x4x16, 2x4x8 and held together by 2 1/2" coated deck screws. I wanted to make sure that this was super study so that nothing came crashing down on our vehicles. With this being said, I over built the frame with hardware. Each wall stud has two 4" lag bolt screws and each ceiling stud has two 6" lag screws.

Every joist has two 3" coated deck screws as well as joist hangers on each side. Each vertical brace has two L-shaped metal brackets connecting to the ceiling support and four 2 3/4" lag bolt screws (except for the last one on the right that lined up with a joist). This was a was a 2 person job and I was glad to have my father assist me with this project.

This area has helped us tremendously with storage and organization, especially with 3 kids. This also gives us the ability to park both cars in the garage without having to use one side as storage overflow.
