How To Landscape With Mulch | DIY Landscape Mulch

mulched backyard with diy garden platform and kids geo dome surround by a 6ft fence

We were tired of our backyard becoming a muddy marshland for 3-4 days every time it rained. So we had 10 cubic yards of triple shredded mulch delivered and we spread it out to cover 50% of our backyard.

The mulch was dropped off in the front driveway around lunchtime but we were unable to start working until that afternoon. We bought both older kids, Sarah and Zach shovels and racks to use on the project. Hannah already had her toy shovel ready to go. We also bought and assembled a Gorilla utility cart which became the workhorse in the project. The huge capacity, swivel steering & full dumping capabilities made the mulch transporting so easy and 100% worth the money!

We separated the mulched area from the grass using rubber edging that we purchase from Costco. This was a better alternative because we didn't want metal or hard plastic borders that the kids could fall on and get hurt easily.

About 2 hours into the project, several neighbors came over to help move and spread the mulch. I think it was much needed social time for everyone. Overall this was a fun family bonding project that produced both a dry and pretty landscaped backyard. Sarah informed us that she's ok if we do a project like this every weekend. :)

We topped off the playground mulch under the swing to provide a softer landing. We also refilled the sandbox with another 10 bags sand and the kids described it as like playing on the beach!
