How To Make Decor For Kids Room | DIY Kids Room Decor

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

Watching our kids grow up and transition from one phase to another is always a bitter sweet part of the parenting process. We began to notice that our 3 year old was no longer sleeping well in her toddler bed. To be fair, she is a little taller than most toddlers and her leg room was running out. We were hoping to make it to her 4th birthday before transitioning to a "big girl" room but we quickly realized the time had come a bit early so we decided to give it a go.

(Before pictures of her "baby room")

Right now her favorite things are Unicorns and Mermaids (along with Cocomelon...) so we decided to go with a Unicorn theme. Mama initially began looking at Target for new bedroom decor and then she thought, good grief we are a woodshop, we should just make it ourselves! So the planning began!

We found several svg files on Etsy that we liked and began prepping the boards and using our OneFinity CNC to get them all cut out.

(Signs primed and pieces cut out. The clouds were cut out to make floating shelves.)

Next, the signs were painted using spray paint/primer and put together using super glue.

Once all of the paint and glue had enough time to dry, we added saw tooth hangers to the back of each sign. Next we added the new wall art along with new furniture purchased from Rooms To Go and new bedding and lamps from Target.

We used 1/2 MDF for the cloud shelves and 1/4 MDF for everything else. Looking back at the cloud shelves, we would use pine instead of MDF if we did it again because structurally the signs would have taken the screw/nails better.

Overall, we are very happy with how this home project turned out. Our little 3 year old enjoys her newly designed space and sleeps very good at night in her big girl bed!
